SUSTAINABILITY PROJECTS MANAGED BY CAFÉ ESMERALDA ALBERGUE POUSADA

The owners of Café Esmeralda Albergue Pousada take great pride in caring for almost 3 hectares of Atlantic Rain Forest in an area close to the historical centre of Trancoso, promoting biodiversity through the preservation of this important Brazilian biome. Our healthy “tree nursery” offers food and shelter to a large variety of native birds, mammals and insects and also aids in cleaning CO2 emissions from the atmosphere.

In order to assist in the pollination of the local native flora, we manage the culture of uruçu and jataí meliponine bees (indigenous stingless bees). This activity is considered as sustainable development because it includes environmental restoration and preservation of trees and guarantees the survival of these native bees, while providing quality medicinal products such as honey, pollen and propolis.

Jataí bees (Tetragonisca angustula)

We have an extensive collection of native orchids which we are successfully propagating in their natural setting. Our intention is to help prevent the extinction of these rare natural beauties due to degradation of the Atlantic Rain Forest.

Orchid (Oncidium varicosum)

In this area we plant a variety of medicinal plants including two special ones from the Amazon Basin, Banisteriopsis caapi and Psicotria viridis, components of the famous Ayahuasca tea. The cultivation of these plants encourages sustainable land use without clearing or cutting existing trees, while increasing green areas and habitat for native fauna.

Guests that are interesting in these special projects may request a guided visit.
